Everyone has already wondered if their iPhone is capable of listening to it. While no evidence has ever come to support this urban legend, we have all experienced it. You are talking about a very specific subject close to your phone, and as luck would have it, advertisements around this same theme suddenly burst onto your screen.
Is this feeling real, or just a creation of our mind? To find out, videographer Aymen carried out a very interesting experiment. In the video, available below, he builds a computer program capable of analyzing the advertisements visible on his iPhone.
No products found.
Trap your iPhone
He then categorized them according to the themes of each advertisement. But his experience does not end there. After a few days of “standard” analysis, he voluntarily spoke about several very specific topics with his iPhone nearby.
The objective was to test whether or not our phones listen to us to offer us targeted advertising. He talked about dog food, an imminent trip or even the desire for home insurance. Very specific themes.
Conclusive results
At the end of the week, he created several graphs to demonstrate whether or not ads appeared on his phone after he talked about a particular topic.
The results are unequivocal. The advertisements visible on your iPhone have changed little or not at all between the time he started this experience and the time he spoke about these themes.
The only counter-example concerns pet food. Two days after talking about it in front of his iPhone, two advertisements appeared. But as he explains in his video, it’s very little, out of the hundreds of advertisements he sees every day.
This experience clearly demonstrates that no, your iPhone is not listening to you to offer you targeted advertisements. If dozens of advertisements appear on a particular theme, it is for other reasons.
Advertisers have a myriad of data about you, they have no need to know what you say to estimate what you think. So yes, they will offer you ideas for Christmas gifts in December or desires for sunny holidays during the long rainy days of February and March.
