In September 2022, Apple launches the iPhone 14 Pro. For the first time since the iPhone X, the Cupertino company is changing the “face” (the front) of its smartphone. The notch disappears in favor of a new functionality that is both software and hardware: Dynamic Island.
But since then, there have been few developments. If you look at an iPhone 14 Pro and an iPhone 17 Pro from the front, screen on, it’s difficult to see any nuance in the design of the two smartphones.
Will things change in 2026? A rumor this week claims that Apple is working on the “biggest change” to the front panel in years. But then, what should we expect?
Face ID under the screen?
Requested for years by iPhone users, the disappearance of Face ID could occur in 2026. The facial recognition service will still be present in the device, but under the screen. A first for Apple. Still according to the same source, cited by CultofMac, the “standard” iPhone 18 and the iPhone Air 2 should not benefit from this new feature. They will retain the current design of the iPhone.

Apple lagging behind the competition
Many competitors have already installed such technology on their smartphones. Although the arrival of Face ID under the screen is a step forward on the iPhone, it will not allow Apple to get a head start on its competitors in terms of design.
The Cupertino company will have to find something else to appeal to the general public next September, especially when we know that this generation of iPhone risks being one of the most expensive in the brand’s history.
