4 iOS updates launched then deleted, what’s happening?

Apple engineers are working hard on the development of iOS 26.3, the final version of which is still awaited. They are on all fronts, since several important updates have just been released for those who refuse to upgrade to Liquid Glass (or cannot due to an outdated device). iOS 18.7.4, iOS 16.7.13, iOS 15.8.6 and iOS 12.5.8 are released alongside iOS 26.2.1. However, Apple removed these updates shortly after their launch.

Apple releases updates for old iPhones… before removing them

iOS 18.7.4, iOS 16.7.13, iOS 15.8.6 and iOS 12.5.8 have just arrived on older iPhone models which no longer receive recent updates. Once is not customary, they do not include new security patches. Above all, they replace an expiring security certificate and resolve a problem preventing certain devices from making emergency calls. Here are the iPhones affected by these updates.

  • iPhone SE (first generation)
  • iPhone SE (second generation)
  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus
  • iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone
  • iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max

Strangely, Apple has stopped signing these updates only a handful of hours after their launchmaking their installation impossible. They eventually returned, except for iOS 16.7.13. A document from Australian telephone operator Telstra explains that an “issue preventing some older Apple devices from connecting to our network” has been discovered. Apple would therefore have chosen to temporarily suspend the update in order to look into this bug.

Apple has since released a carrier settings update to address this issue, but installing iOS 16.7.13 might remain unavailable depending on the region and iPhone model.
