France Identity soon mandatory to access certain sites?

The day before yesterday, we spoke to you about European initiatives to better protect minors on digital platforms. As a reminder, the Commission is proposing a system which aims to protect minors online by verifying their date of birth, while respecting the privacy of users. After having spoken to you about the broad outlines of this project, let us now see the complete details, based on the press release official of the European Commission.

This “white label age verification plan” should be integrated into the France Identity application in early 2026. France is one of the five pilot countries with Spain, Italy, Denmark and Greece. This solution will allow you to prove your majority on the internet, confidentially. The initiative is part of the Digital Service Act adopted in 2023.

How does this system protect your privacy?

The system will be integrated into the France Identity application, which you may already use for your CNI or your driving license, and which has recently offered the option of adding your registration document. You will be able to certify your majority to websites without revealing your name or date of birth, thanks to the EU system integrated into France Idété.

Operation is simple. When you access adult content, the site asks you to prove your age. France Identity verifies that you are over 18 years old, but only sends the site confirmation of your majority, without any other personal data.

Technology that protects your data

This solution is based on a strict separation between the entity which verifies your age (France Identity) and the one which receives the confirmation (the website). Every proof of age can only be used onceto prevent tracking between different services. The system works with open source technologies, compatible with the future European digital identity portfolio planned for the end of 2026.

If majority verification for adult content is the application most promoted by the EU, it could also be used to verify the age of users on social networks. Finally, the app is already used in various other situations, where proving one’s identity is necessary, checking transport tickets on SNCF trains, but also OUIGO trains recently. At the same time, the service allows you to keep a copy of your vital card, your driving license, and your registration document in your smartphone.
